Volunteer Glasgow News

Volunteers’ Week 2021

Today marks the first day of Volunteers’ Week 2021! Volunteer involving organisations across the country are making sure to thank volunteers for all of their amazing efforts. There are fantastic  free resources to help you celebrate via: volunteersweek.scot

Remember to use @volunteerglasgo on your Twitter posts, if you want us to like and share your Volunteers’ Week posts. It is a great time to celebrate and raise awareness of volunteers.

Volunteering Across Glasgow Short Films

You might have seen in our previous email alert that we are looking for some coordinators/volunteers to take part in a wee project! We are going to submit some short videos based on “Volunteering Across Glasgow” to Glasgow Science Centre’s Space for Everyone project. Films will be shown on the big screen outside GSC or in an exhibition so it would be a great opportunity to showcase some of the brilliant volunteering network we have in Glasgow. The ask is for clips of volunteers and/or staff from organisations across Glasgow answering the following three questions in one word – you can film them on your phone and the clips only have to be a few seconds long!

  1. What does volunteering mean to you?
  2. What does community mean to you?
  3. Can you describe Glasgow in one word?
… and we’ll edit everyone’s answers together to answer the questions. Deadline is 4th June
Here is a link to a YouTube video with full instructions if anyone’s interested!

A forum has been requested time and again at our networking events and confirmed in our recent survey and we have listened.

This will be a safe space to gain advice, give advice, share news and take part in discussions. Like the networking events it will be a fantastic opportunity to share and connect with your peers. As a collective there is a wealth of knowledge and experience from small grassroots projects to larger national organisations. We are keen to facilitate this so all can benefit. We will of course be on there as well to add to discussion and share news but we are keen that this is your space.

Saltire Awards

Just a quick reminder that the Saltire Awards scheme has been ongoing throughout the pandemic and is the perfect way for young people to get the recognition they deserve for their volunteering. In fact, if any of your young volunteers have been doing any informal volunteering over the last year (shopping for neighbours, collecting prescriptions, doing some gardening etc) they can claim Saltire Awards for these, during the pandemic.
There is now a group admin function on the new Saltire Awards website where you can add your young volunteers’ hours and produce their certificates. If you would like more information on this, and a quick demonstration, please email: tara.bentley@volunteerglasgow.org.
I would ask you to encourage your young volunteers to log their hours and claim certificates if they have their own account, or if you would like to do it for them, as a group admin, please get in touch.

Don’t forget Saltire hours can be backdated for up to 2 years so hopefully no young volunteer will lose out!
