Talking to a Befriending Support Worker – Sorcha #Befriending Week

We chatted to Sorcha, who recently joined the Volunteer Glasgow team as a Befriending Support Worker in our Young Persons Befriending Service. Here’s what she had to say about her experience working with befrienders, young people, and their families.

“I’ve been so lucky to meet so many incredible Befrienders as a support worker. From meeting volunteers at the beginning and seeing how passionate they are about being a positive figure in a young person’s life, to watching them dedicate themselves to learning everything they can through the training and then thrive in a match, it really shows how rewarding Befriending can be for both the young people, and the Befrienders. I am always looking for more Befrienders to be matched with young people in the North East of Glasgow, so if you would like to be a positive influence in a young person’s life, develop your skills and learn new ones, please get in touch!

Befriending is such an incredible opportunity for young people to explore new interests and activities, while providing them with a safe and supported space to learn and grow. 95% of the young people we support say their Befriending match has increased their ability to take part in age appropriate activities, and 90% say they have improved their skills and ability to cope. Befriending also has amazing benefits for Befrienders too, from providing experience for careers in the likes of child care or social work, to offering opportunities to try new things and have fun, for example doing go-karting or laser-quest!”
