Dominic’s Three Peak Challenge Fundraiser

We would like to give a massive thank you and congratulations to our brilliant volunteer Dominic Watters, who recently completed the Three Peaks Challenge to raise funds for Volunteer Glasgow!

The Three Peaks Challenge consists of climbing the highest peaks in Scotland, England and Wales (Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon) in under 24 hours. Incredibly, Dominic completed all three climbs in less than 22 hours – climbing night and day and smiling through wind and rain.

“I like challenges,” says Dominic. “I like things that are difficult because they make you feel like you’re growing. If it had been easy it wouldn’t have been much of a story!”

Dominic has been volunteering as a Befriender with Volunteer Glasgow’s Elderly Home Visiting Service for four years. After watching a news story on the impact of loneliness on elderly people, he was eager to find a way to reach out and support those experiencing loneliness and isolation in Glasgow.

“I just got in touch with Volunteer Glasgow and went through the training nights. They matched me up with Bill (86), who I still see today. I’m very good friends with Bill’s partner, Olga, as well – they’re almost like the grandparents I never had. […] “Bill and Olga have a lot of life experience… the stories that they tell me, the life experience they’ve got, the wisdom… I’ve learned a lot.”

Over the course of the Covid-19 pandemic, more befriending opportunities have taken place over the phone or online. Dominic started talking to Neil (61) at the beginning of lockdown last year – “We met for the first time about two months ago after speaking on the phone every week for a year. Now we continue to meet once a week.”

Dominic says that his experience with the Elderly Home Visiting Service has been “lifechanging” and inspired him to raise funds and encourage others to try volunteering to support elderly people in their community – “what they don’t realise is, they’ve helped me as well. I live on my own, I was stuck in my house during lockdown. Being able to speak to them every week was good for me as well.”

“I see the benefit first-hand when they’re telling me on the phone and in-person how beneficial it’s been… that tells me this charity’s working.”

Dominic has already raised an incredible £570 for Volunteer Glasgow. If you’d like to donate, head over to Dominic’s Instagram page –
