About this opportunity:
Yoker Community Campus (in partnership with Volunteer Glasgow is looking for Literacy Tutors aged 18 years and over to help people with learning disabilities to be more active in their local area. Our INCLUDED programme requires 6 volunteers to prepare and deliver learning sessions for our service users. If you have a couple of hours to contribute you will be working with participants to improve their literacy. Helping with group and individual activities to support participants to achieve their goals and have a fun and rewarding time. Volunteers will work on empowering and motivating adults with a learning disability to achieve their goals. In particular volunteers will devise and deliver literacy training and support to individuals and/or small groups. For example, this could be one-to-one support with reading or writing, or running a book club. The programme is very person centered and will therefore operate on a flexible problem solving manner with staff and other volunteers. Literacy skills are vital for our participants to move forward in the community. The service(s) the volunteers provide will be invaluable. Tasks will include: preparing and delivering literacy sessions; developing an understanding of different needs/conditions. Encouraging students to reach their goals by creating a flexible service. Frequency & Commitment: Volunteers will be required to deliver a 2 hour session weekly, plus allow 2-3 hours preparation time. Sessions will be flexible to suit the service user and the volunteer.

Where does it happen/How do I get there?
Activities are based at the Yoker Community Campus, 10 Kelso Place, Glasgow G14 0LL. Buses 1, 1A, 1B, 1D, 2, 3, and 6 stop there. Yoker train station is a 10 minute walk from the building. Trains leave Glasgow Central Lower Level on a regular basis.

Group/Organisation aims: To provide services that will alleviate poverty for residents of Yoker and adjoining communities. To provide services that will promote or improve the physical and mental health of residents of Yoker and adjoining communities. To provide leisure and recreational opportunities designed to enhance the quality of life of residents of Yoker and adjoining communities.

Skills, experience, or qualifications required: Experience of preparing and delivering literacy sessions is essential. Personal qualities such as creativity, patience and friendliness are required for this volunteering role. Clear speech and a good understanding of English is a must.
