Everyone at Volunteer Glasgow was greatly shocked and saddened when we received the news last week of the sudden passing of our dear friend Catherine Walker. Catherine first began volunteering as part of the Welcome Team here at our Bothwell Street offices in the summer of 2014 and to say she made a huge impact hardly seems sufficient. Key to her role here was welcoming members of the public to our drop in, putting them at ease and supporting them to identify suitable volunteering roles. This was something Catherine excelled at. It is easy to forget sometimes that for many people it is a big deal to cross our door and ask for our help but Catherine’s gentle, supportive, empathetic and encouraging nature meant everyone felt immediately welcomed and valued. This extended to our other volunteers, many of whom she was instrumental in training, supporting and encouraging.
Not satisfied with being the friendliest, most welcoming and inclusive presence it is possible to imagine Catherine also used any spare minute to provide invaluable assistance with administrative and financial tasks. There really was no end to her energy and talents and she was an inspiration to everyone at Volunteer Glasgow.
It is important to remember at this sad time that although no longer with us Catherine has left behind a wonderfully positive legacy. Her values shone through so strongly in everything she did and through the example she set those values will continue to inform and inspire the work of everyone here, staff and volunteers alike. Finally there are people all over Glasgow currently giving up their time, energy and skills through volunteering whose first steps along that road were gently and skilfully guided by Catherine. They all make our city a better place and so did Catherine, she will be much missed.
