Drumchapel Elderly Home Visiting & Daycare Service

The scheme was set up to promote the involvement of volunteers to befriend isolated and vulnerable older people living in the G15 area. We also provide support to people with physical disabilities and to those suffering from mental health problems

Project aims & objectives

  • To provide individual support and companionship through home visiting volunteers
  • Toencourage members to get out and about
  • To provide a lunch club for members to make new friends & try activities
  • To offer a couple of hours respite to carers via home visitors and through our lunch club
  • To recruit volunteers to help with the above and offer training & support

What do volunteers do?

  • Keep the person company in their own home for a couple of hours per week -have a chat, offer a listening ear
  • Offer friendship and relieve isolation – brighten someone’s day with a visit, everyone gets lonely from time to time
  • Help them get out and about-going to shops etc
  • Keep them up to date with local events & services – perhaps escort them on a project outing

There is no typical volunteer, volunteers come from a range of backgrounds – all we require is that people have time to listen and show a caring interest in others who need extra support.

New volunteers must complete a preparation – training course, which equips them with all they need to know about their befriending role. We also offer volunteers regular support and provide a variety of other training options and activities within the Project.

So if you:

  • Have a couple of hours spare per week (day/evening or weekends)
  • Are interested in meeting people * Learn new skills and gain confidence
  • Improve your social life & enjoy having fun

All you need to do is contact the address shown above or if you have any other services ask them to pass your details on your behalf. The project Co-ordinator will call to see you to explain more or answer any questions you may have Home visiting We try to match you with a volunteer visitor as soon as we can and we also like to make sure it is the right person for you.

The time of visit is up to you and what you would like to do – either stay in for a chat or go out for a couple of hours. The Co-ordinator keeps in touch to make sure everything is ok.

The lunch club operates three afternoons per week: On Mondays, Tuesdays & Thursdays from 12-noon–2.00pm.

We are based at the Phoenix Tenants Hall. We have transport to take you there and home again, if required. You have a bite to eat, a chat with new friends and a game of bingo.
