Volunteer Centre pilots online opportunity information management

The VC is now piloting a new service which gives organisations like yours the convenience of managing the information we hold about your volunteering opportunities ONLINE. At last, we hear you say! In the near future all organisations will be issued with a username and password and will be able to create, edit and delete opportunties as well as edit their organisation's information and upload images and other information. If you would like to be included in the pilot then please get in touch by Monday 28th June.

 

Employer Supported Volunteering

Increasingly, employers are turning to volunteering for staff team building and to address their corporate social responsibilities. The VC receives a number of these offers and would recommend that voluntary organisations 'plan ahead' to take advantage of offers coming up. They are usually for one day and can involve teams of between 5 and 30 people.

  • IT Specialist - Ronke is studying an MSc in Information Technology and has a BSc in Computer Science. She has IT skills in Hardware and software troubleshooting, Installation and configuration of hardware and software such as MS Exchange 2003, Microsoft server 2003 and Windows Operating system, Backing backup of data on servers, router configuration, MS word, Powerpoint, Excel, Outlook and providing technical support. She would like to assist a project in Information Technology or a business analysis role. For more details contact alistair.malloy@volunteerglasgow.org

  • Photographer - Tomas, from the Czech Republic, is a 'first class photographer' and photojournalist who would like to be more involved in Scottish Culture. Normally found photographing events such as the Dakar Rally, he recently volunteered with the Southside Festival and also photographed the whole event for the organisers. If you have a photographic project in mind please contact susan.knowles@volunteerglasgow.org

Employer Supported Volunteering

A team of 6 or 7 from the Scottish Government employability policy team are looking for a community project to assist for a day in Glasgow. Can you use them? The date has been set for the 9th August. Contact Julie at julieann.bilotti@scotland.gsi.gov.uk


Funding Update

Funding Extra is an excellent digest of funding sources available to the voluntary sector in Glasgow. The Glasgow Equality Networks Forum updates this weekly.

Diageo in partnership with UnLtd is supporting a new UK-wide social entrepreneurship programme - 'Bring it to Life'. The programme will offer support and funding for people aged between 25- 35 to create new social ventures. There will two categories - 'catalyst' (2k) and 'development' (15k) - with a limited number of awards being made in Scotland, and we're told they'll initially be targeting Edinburgh and Glasgow. Firstport will be leading on this in Scotland with a fairly tight deadline for entries of 23rd July, with expressions of interest required by 9th July.

CSV’s Action Earth campaign wants to empower people to take action in their community. To do this, they have grants of £250 to give to groups of volunteers who are carrying out practical environment projects in Scotland. You can download application forms or apply online. Deadline 31st July 2010.

The Austin & Hope Pilkington Trust award grants to charitable organisations in the UK and overseas. Trustees will welcome applications in 2010 for projects within the following areas: Children; Youth; Elderly; Medical . Next deadline for applications is 1 Nov.

The Garfield Weston Foundation is a general grant-giving charity who aim to consider and support the widest range of charitable activity, including making donations towards general running costs. Grants are typically one-off cash donations - 83% were for £20,000 or less last year. The Trustees anticipate that charities will have secured a significant proportion of funding prior to applying. Applications can be made at any time. For more information and an application form, go to their website.

Lawrence Atwell's Charity aims to help young people free themselves from poverty and disadvantage by heading into the job they want. Through tailored grant-making to those people who are most in need, the charity will invest in their talents and aspirations to help them find their. Queen's Award for Voluntary Service

To ensure more volunteer communities in Scotland receive the recognition they deserve at a national level, QAVS would like to invite you to help encourage nominations for The Queen’s Awards for Voluntary Service for local groups. Applications should be in by September for consideration for the 2011 awards.

Wave of Friendship Volunteer Bursaries

Volunteer bursaries of up to £500 per person are available for people to take up opportunities of a volunteering exchange between London and Scotland. If there are any good practice projects you manage, or if there are any in London that you’d like to learn more about, this might be a good stream of funding to use for the purpose. And as long as you are volunteering, remember this is open to staff as well as volunteers. For further information go to the People Making Waves website.

Realising Potential - Future Steps for Social Enterprise in Scotland

This year CEiS are teaming up with a range of partners including Big Lottery Fund, Kibble, The Wise Group, The Scottish Government, RBS Community Banking and others to explore social enterprise priorities in advance of the next action plan for social enterprise. CEiS will again use the impressive Crystal interactive technology where participants will use laptop tablets to comment, question and respond to issues, ensuring a really participative event and a great record of the discussion. Speakers as usual will be inspiring and informative and will include a mix of home grown and international social enterprise, business and community leaders. The date is 2nd Sept in Glasgow.

Young Scot Hot 500

Young Scot is looking for 500 young people between the ages of 11 and 26 to become members of an online expert panel that will help shape everything that Young Scot does. Membership will last for one year and will involve optional monthly online tasks. If you know any young people who would be interested in joining the Hot 500, then encourage them to visit the Young Scot 500 website.

Bhagavat Educational Trust

For unemployed young people aged 18 to 30, who are unemployed, with troubled backgrounds and no direction in their life. This is a ‘Leonardo Da Vinci’ project of Bhagavat Educational Trust - a life changing experience, which can boost their self-esteem and change their attitude to life.Two weeks in Bulgaria working in favour of orphanages and marginalised children. Fully funded by the EU - all expenses paid.
