As a major provider of training to the Volunteering Sector around Glasgow, we are currently reviewing the training needs arising from working with volunteers. Babel Fishing

At the Volunteer Centre we are regularly contacted by bi and multi-lingual folks who are keen to use their language skills for the benefit of others. Some are qualified interpreters and translators. Since the last bulletin we have heard from fluent english and swahili/ bajani/spanish/ russian/french/polish/urdu and arabic speakers. If your organisation can benefit from language skills then please let us know.


Volunteering Special Offers!

A number of people have recently contacted the VC to offer specific skills. They have not been screened by the VC and we would ask that you follow up with your own selection procedures.

  • Event Manager - Fiona is an experienced freelance event manager, using her skills to help others manage their events, bringing her project management, problem solving and written communication skills to work on: conferences; fully themed parties and gala dinners; award ceremonies; road shows; automotive events; corporate fun days and outdoor concerts. She's new to Glasgow and keen to help out. For more details contact alistair.malloy@volunteerglasgow.org

  • IT Specialist - Alastair has 25 years experience in IT Networking and Web Design. He is looking to consider supporting a project in a significant piece of work. For more details contact jim.mcaleese@volunteerglasgow.org

  • Seamstress - Ramzan has significant skills in sewing and all aspects of clothing including design. She is looking to use these skills for the benefit of others. For more details contact alistair.malloy@volunteerglasgow.org

  • Photographer - Justine has 20 years media photography experience including working with celebrities. She wishes to support an org. with her skills. For more details contact jim.mcaleese@volunteerglasgow.org

  • Arabic Interpreter - Jehd is fluent in Arabic and English and is currently working on an MSc at University. He has some free time and is offering to help others through interpreting, for example, at appointments. For more details contact jess.kearslake@volunteerglasgow.org

  • Accountant/Finance Officer - Aisha has recently been made unemployed after nearly 5 years post-graduate employment in the field of finance. She is very happy to assist an org. in their accounting, finance or payroll needs. For more details contact alistair.malloy@volunteerglasgow.org

  • Librarian - Jack is a librarian to trade with extensive cataloguing, information research and retrieval skills. Whilst looking for work, he is also keen to put his skills to good use in the community. For more details contact alistair.malloy@volunteerglasgow.org

  • Musician - Jethro is a skilled all round musician. He plays the guitar, bass, drums and sings. He is looking to share his many talents and skills with a community project. For more details contact jess.kearslake@volunteerglasgow.org

Funding Update

Funding Extra is an excellent digest of funding sources available to the voluntary sector in Glasgow. The Glasgow Equality Networks Forum updates this weekly.

The Big Lottery Fund (BIG) has announced a new £50 million funding programme for Scotland to help transform the life chances of young people leaving care and fundamentally improve the lives of older people with dementia and their carers.

‘see me’ has a new Local Grants Scheme will grant awards of up to £5,000 to local groups across Scotland who can come up with fresh and innovative ideas and projects to tackle stigma and discrimination associated with mental health in their area.

The LankellyChase Foundation have around 120 grants of £500 each are available to charities to support summer activities for children and young people aged from 5 to 17 and who are young carers, or who are living in refuges for families escaping domestic violence.

Your News

Changes to OSCR Regulations

OSCR has announced changes to reporting requirements. The annual income threshold at which charities in Scotland must prepare accruals accounts, instead of simpler receipts and payments accounts, will rise next year from £100,000 to £250,000, the Office of the Scottish Charity Regulator has announced. Other changes to reporting can be found in the report.

FREE training for staff supporting MCMCs

The FSA along with Citizens Advice and Fairbridge have designed a course called 'Young People & Money' to better equip those who work with young people aged under 25, who are not in education, employment or training in providing them with a greater understanding, awareness and confidence along with supporting toolkits to help their young people make more sense of their money and ultimately become more financially capable.

SCVO recently published an article about voluntary organisations providing consistently higher quality care services than local authorities or private sector bodies.

Jobcentre Plus changes

JC+'s latest newsletter has interesting information in relation to: the new 'fit note' replacing the 'sick note' ; more help for carers; the new accelerated flexibilities pilot being rolled out across Glasgow, allowing significant changes to the existing operating model.
