Getting started? What to think about - what to ask.

Getting Started as a Volunteer

Try and get things clear at the start - use this tick list to remind you to find out about the following:

  • Information about the group or organisation.
  • A clear outline about what you are expected to do (preferably written down).
  • Expenses and insurance—do you need to keep travel receipts? who do you get your expenses from?
  • Who you should approach if you have any questions or problems about your volunteering.
  • Will there be a trial period and how long will it be?

Keep in touch with us - we're here to help! Perhaps you would like to find a new or additional volunteering opportunity for example. We'd be delighted to hear from you.

Enjoy yourself! Volunteering is all about new experiences, feeling good and making a difference.

Remind the organisation that they will need to inform us if any of the information we gave you about them is out of date.

Any problems? Sometimes things don't always work out the way we expect them to. If things go wrong, talk to someone. Remember that we may be able to help too - so give us call.

What Will Be Expected of Me?

Volunteers give up their time voluntarily and without charge but alongside all the benefits volunteering can give you - new friends, new experiences, new places - it also brings responsibilities.

You have a responsibility to:

  • Be committed.
  • Be reliable.
  • Ask questions if you are not sure about something.
  • Understand the Importance of strict confidentiality concerning other people and their circumstances.
  • Keep in contact with your Volunteer Organiser.
