Mission Statement

The Volunteer Centre aims to improve the quality of life for the people of Glasgow by offering opportunities to use and enhance their skills in volunteering, training and personal development.
Volunteering is "the commitment of time and energy by individuals for the benefit of the community. It is undertaken freely and by choice and without personal financial gain"

About the Volunteer Centre

The Volunteer Centre was established in 1970 and since then has established a successful track record in providing volunteer bureau (VB), community development, befriending, training and advisory services to the general public and to a range of specific client groups across Glasgow.

The organisation has been the designated Local Volunteering Development Agency (LVDA) for Glasgow since 1996 (under the Government's Make a Difference Initiative), serving the largest local authority population in Scotland. It acts as a link between people who wish to volunteer and organisations who involve volunteers in their work.

The principle aim of The Volunteer Centre is to improve the quality of life for the people of Glasgow by offering opportunities to use and enhance their skills in volunteering, training and personal development. Directors, staff and volunteers work in partnership to:

  • Provide individuals interested in volunteering with the information, training and support they need to enable them to play an active role in volunteering.
  • Work with other organisations to develop new opportunities for volunteering.
  • Support individuals, groups and organisations wishing to make a positive contribution to community life and social inclusion.
  • Provide training and learning opportunities to enable people to develop their skills and talents.
  • Promote sound policy and practice in volunteering.
  • Work in neighbourhoods to develop informal care and support services with vulnerable families and individuals.
  • Work in partnership with charitable trusts, local authorities and other organisations to deliver community care services.
  • Promote and sustain a commitment to equality of opportunity in all functions and activities.
Volunteering is "the commitment of of time and energy by individuals for the benefit of the community. It is undertaken freely and by choice and without personal financial gain"
